Default Is this cooler big enough?

I'm looking at a 48 quart rectangular cooler. If my calcs are correct, if 1.3 quarts of water is needed for each pound of grain, does that mean I can mash up to 36 pound batches in this cooler?

Or am I a nut case?

That's the size I have and 14 lbs of grain looks lost in it!

Yes it is plenty big enough. Your calcs are wrong, however, as you did not take into consideration the volume of the grain itself.

Probably about 30 lbs.

See: http://www.rackers.org/calcs.shtml (scroll down to 'Can I Mash It?')

I brewed a barleywine eight days ago. The 20lb. grain bill plus water nearly filled my 48qt cooler. I could have squeezed in some more, but I wouldn't have felt very confident in my ability to stir without some overflowage.

At 1.25 qt/lb you should be able to mash close to 30lbs of grain in a 48qt cooler!!
