Default Carapils question

Do you have to mash carapils, or can it just be steeped like crystal malt?

Must be mashed, yes.

Aren't all grains that start with "Cara" a form of crystal malts. At least that is what I was told.

Found another page that says that only 20% of sugars will be gotten when not using in a standard mash (meaning, when steeped). So not too much gain there.

It depends. Some "CaraPils"/Dextrin malts do have starch content and have not been fully "crystalized". Weyermann's CaraFoam falls into this category as that malt still retains some diastatic enzyme content. Not sure if any others are like that. However, while mashing would be the best way to go you can get at least some effect from any of the CaraPils/Dextrin by steeping.

Carapils, which is a specific trademark and what the OP asked about, has no enzymes and is not used for the reason of getting fermentable sugars.

My crushed carapils is 2.5 years old - so maybe that explains my question in an earlier post "this beer has not cleared at all". I will ditch it.
