Default Big Beer Help

So I plan to brew the Three Philosophers Quad clone from Stan's BLAM. I recently saw a thread where Denny mentioned that when making a big beer, one should brew it as a no sparge beer planning for about 55% efficiency and then brew a smaller beer off of the second runnings...

Any more info/experience with no sparge for big beer?
Is this really the way to go for a big beer?
What OG what you consider a big beer and doing the no sparge? 1080?
Anyone ever brew the Three Philosophers Quad clone?
