I have no ball valve in the converted keg BK I use. I chill with my IC then stir like hell to whirlpool. 15 mins later I auto siphon from the side and get very clear wort. I'll get a ball valve when I get a pump, for now that's $$ put toward grain.

I have a valve on my pot and have never used it.

I don't know how I brewed before I put valves on my pots. One of the top 3 upgrades I have ever made.

But I run a plate chiller, so that's probably the main reason.

no, you don't "need" one.

Agreed, in the same way one doesn't "need" a Ferrari. You still know that you'd buy one if you could. I don't have a Ferrari or a ball valve for any of my equipment, but something tells me I'll be acquiring many, many ball valves before my first Ferrari.

I need my balls, but I don't need my ball valve. Ok, I don't really "need" my balls, but I would like to keep them. I already have an excellent singing voice.

EDIT: And I certainly don't "kneed" my balls.

Sorry for the hijack. Couldn't resist.

I have been thinking about installing a ball valve on my kettle, but I've gotten by for a long time without it so I'm not really motivated.

So far as transferring 5 gallons of hot wort, I just use my HDPE pitcher that I bought at Walmart for $1. I transfer a few gallons via the pitcher and then the remaining wort in the pot is easy to handle.

25 years brewing, on and off, never used a valve on the kettle, not sure I ever will? Maybe someday??
