So can I assume that nobody uses a simple grain bag?
I have used one for 3 gal batches, but they are a PITA. I switched my 3 gal cooler to a SS braid, too, and enjoy the process much more. (And the braid is actually cheaper than the grain bag!)

Well, the biggest beer I did was a 7% porter and it seemed to work okay.

I usually lean towards the meium to lighter ABV's though, so generally it was never a problem.

Like I said though, if there's a 5 and 10 gallon sitting next to each other, grab the 10. Life will be easier, especially if (when) you move to 10 gallon batches.
