Default Using Growlers to Bottle ?

I just read a post on the AHA forum where someone said that you CAN'T use a growler to carbonate. Is this true ? If so, why not ?

It's a heady debate, split down the middle....

Some people have had success, others have had bombs.

Never done it myself though.

Can't hurt to try one and keep it in a box or something in case of a leak. I wouldn't bottle a whole batch in untested growlers though, make sure the ones you're using can handle the pressure.

My LHBS said that some growlers have too thin of glass at the top and that the pressure of carbing could break them. That being said, they did have some other growlers that were MUCH thicker at the top and they said that those would probably work. Needless to say, we did not bottle in any growler. It seems that all the work and waiting that goes into beer making isn't worth the risk (at least for us) of losing our beer due to trying to skip out on a few bottles.
