Think I'm in Trouble...Well Not Really
|
|
Hey Y'All,
I was planning on getting ready to bottle tommorrow. Everything is going well and my batch has really cleared nicely.
So today i head out the HBS and pick up a bench capped and some caps. My bottles are cleaned out and just need to be sanitized.
So I decide to come online and check out capping techniques etc. Come to find out that after collecting all of my bottles..........I shouldn't use twist-offs.
Any thoughts, concerns.......??? I tried one just to test and it comes off so easy that i'm afriad I'll lose the whole batch......HELP!!!
Other than buying bottles, which I really feel negative about doing, is there a way to make this work, or am I take my brew out for a death trip.

Don't use the twist off bottles! Besides buying empties you could drink alot of pop top beers between now and tomorrow but that may be a bit much... I have read where people have used two liter cola bottles but I would not say this is an ideal answer. The two liter bottles would at least seal up where the twist tops wont. If your in a crunch like it sounds you may be, go buy some cheap drinks in the two liters and try that.

Go buy the bottled water that come in the bottles (like soda containers). This way you won't have any off flavors like Pepsi, etc.

Visit bars. Ask them to save bottles for you. If your state recycles, you can stop by beer stores and ask very nice for the empties. You could also find a recycling drop off center that has an open back door and go through the bottles there.
Good luck

Igor, I started buying a lot of Sprite in green plastic 1 L bottles when I started brewing. I'm about half and half plastic and glass now. Plastic bottles are pretty cheap anyhow. But the guys are right - just find a supply of bottles at a local bar or something, and you'll be okay. Meanwhile - don't panic ... leave your beer in airlocked secondary until you have bottles.

I've NEVER seen a widget in a bottle.

The widget is easy to get out with the help of needle nose pliers. Nice bottles.

The widgets are in the Draught Bottles and Cans. Up until a few years ago the only Guinness you could get in a bottle was Guiness Extra Stout, this bottle is larger and does not have widget.
I've used both bottles, but I must say that pulling the widget out of a case of Draught bottles was only made bareble because of the company of a fine homebrew.
