Default Sanyo 4912 Now I'm Fillin' my Pants!

The time is quickly approaching for me to drill my fridge. I did the equal parts cornstarch and rubbing alcohol paste and brushed the top of the fridge (after the plastic top was removed.)

I'm a little worried. I was expecting to see a perfect line 7 inches from the back of the fridge, like I've read...

Instead, there was more of a blob, about 7 inches from the back of the fridge.. the thing was almost six inches long and three inches deep (very worrisome!)

I am not reassured by this. I really need some input from those who have experience with this or who have done this before. What should one expect when they do the paste test?

I'm not speaking from personal experience on this, as I don't own a 4912, but from everything that I have read about this conversion if you drill your hole directly in the center of the top of the fridge you will miss the condenser cross over refrigerant line. I'm not sure this will reassure you, but I tried.

Try adding some more rubbing alcohol to thin out the paste and paint it on. Turn on the fridge and give it some time for the line embedded in the top to heat up and evaporate off the alcohol.

John

Ya I would let the fridge get to room tempo inside. Then plug it in and let the line get nice and hot after about 1 hour of running, then spray the mixture over to see the line.

I'm right there with ya - drilling mine on monday and installing 2 thru-the-door shanks. I have never seen this setup on a Sanyo, but I'm doin it!

Hey chill, I saw a thread once on another forum where someone did just that to a 4912. IIRC, it worked out great. I'll try and find the thread and provide a link for you.

OK,

Maybe I'll try one more time with a nice alcohol/water mix.. I put the paste on originally and then plugged it in.. maybe I should let it warm up first...???

D'oh. Thought I was a pioneer. Oh well.

I figure the height is good, it's cheaper, easier, still looks good. Why not?
It should be almost too easy. Two 7/8" holes. Clean up with the dremel. Install shanks and ultra-flow faucets, drink and post pictures. I am waiting on 4 kegs from orfy's ebay guy, and I'll need to pick up a filled CO2 tank from the welding shop. I am less than a week away, no doubt!

I'm picking up the same fridge tomorrow at Best Buy... I'm glad I read this or there is a REALLY good chance I would have just drilled right through it. I'm more of the "ask questions later" kinda guy... had no idea there was even a concern about drilling the top!

Here is a link to a thread on the subject of Sanyo conversion. It's the 4911 shown, but I'm told they are the same.

If you have any apprehensions, bear this in mind. The refridgerator wall is comprised of thin metal, styofoam insulation and thin plastic.

If you are using a hole saw.

With a bit the same size as the Hole saw's pilot. Carefully drill a hole to puncture the plastic skin. Poke around and make sure there isn't anything in the way. If not drill all the way through.

Use the hole saw on the plastic side and slowly cut through just enough to cut a hole through the plastic only.

You should be able to remove all of the insulation and verify there are no obstructions.

You should now be clear to drill from the top worry free.
