I am going to set up a cooler so I can take a keg with me up north but I have one question about using a paintball tank to serve. Should the tank be horizontal or vertical? I don't want to damage the regulator. It will be a little while before I build it but this has been bugging me.

I'd keep it vertical. I am pretty sure the paintball tanks have liquid CO2 in them and liquid CO2 would enter the regulator if horizontal.

Well that is my main concern. Its just most paintball tanks mount horizontally on the guns so I wasn't sure if they were designed differently.

No they aren't (made differently). I paint ball a lot- often in the winter and in the cold your suppose to carry your marker barrel up to keep the co2 vertical (and the bottom towards the ground). When it's very cold, you can feel the co2 squish and watch c02 drip out of a paintball gun. Several minutes later, the whole thing should be frozen. Keep it vertical as much as possible.

Some paintball guns have an expansion chamber built into the gun so that liquid CO2 expands to a gas before reaching the gun.
