Noob Kegging Question
|
|
I have plans to purchase a 20lb CO2 bottle w/regulator and hoses, a kegerator and some more cornies. Right now, I have two cornies.
Anyway, I saw the threads on the small coolers for carrying kegs to parties and it got me to thinking.
Would it be possible for me to prime my beer in a cornie, then rig up one of those coolers and buy a small CO2 hand charger with extra cylinders for dispering??

You see every drink of liquor you take kills a thousand brain cells. Now that doesn't much matter 'cos we got billions more. And first the sadness cells die so you smile real big. And then the quiet cells go so you just say everything real loud for no reason at all. That'ok, that's ok because the stupid cells go next, so everything you say is real smart. And finally, come the memory cells. These are tough SOBs to kill.

Yes that's possible, but if you are talking instead of a kegerator, you may be dissapointed with the results.
There is no need to prime with sugar when you keg. The CO2 setup will do a much more consistant job, with one less step.
EDIT: I think those coolers you speak of are for 3-gal cornies. I haven't seen one that will accomodate the full height of 5-gallon keg.

the coolers will fit a 5 gallon keg, it'll just stick up past the "lid" of the cooler. It wouldn't be difficult to make a "cozy" for one to keep it chilly up top though.

Can I force carb with one of those small CO2 dispensers?? Because like I mentioned, I'm not going to be able to purchase a full blown set up(20lb tank w/regulator). I was just wanting to put my cornies to use and if I could do that with only spending $30 bucks that would be great.

Yep. All the local dudes use the little hand-held CO2 charger when they travel with their kegs. I've been lusting after one myself.
As for the "transport vessel", your imagination is the only limitation! Coolers, trash cans, wagons, there are many things to try!
As far as actually carbing the beer, just use priming sugar, and a calculator meant for kegging such as the one in BeerSmith, or on a number of handy web pages. You'll spend what you would've on a tank and regulator very very quickly.

Nope, those things go real fast and are made for dispensing.

Theoretically it would be possible, but you'd reach the break-even point on a real CO2 tank and hoses much quicker than you'd expect if you're trying to force carb with those tiny bottles.

Thanks everyone. That's what I was afraid of. I've got a decent set-up lined up for under $75 bucks, but with money as tight as it is right now, I'd almost rather spend my money on a new batch of beer and just bottle everything.
