So I'm getting quotes of between $140-190 to buy a used 20 lb CO2 tank at local gas supply stores PLUS $28-30 for the gas.

Am I getting ripped off?

The wisdom of buying new aside, Amazon shows 20 pound steel tanks for just under $130 delivered in the US. So I'd say they aren't doing you any favors...

But what's the point in buying new, when the easiest method is to exchange? I don't care about having a shiny new one. I just want the gas.

Point is, you could buy a brand new steel tank for appreciably less than the best offer you've received for used. OK?

Um, I get that. I'm not trying to exasperate you, I'm just asking a question and I'm really, really stupid, so I understand if you have to ask me if I got your "preface" about wisdom or whatever in buying new and exchanging for old.

What's the fascination with exchanging? Buy yourself a nice tank and get it refilled.

Not sure what's typical in your neck of the woods, but around here, a 20lb refill can be had for about $18. Also, you might try beverage supply stores - I found one where I was able to get a CO2 tank "rental" that amounted to a $50 deposit with perpetual $15 exchanges for their 15lb CO2 cylinders. Whenever I run out, I bring the cylinder back and swap it out for a fresh one for $15, done. If I had paid for my own 15lb cylinder, I'd have to drop off said cylinder and wait for them to batch fill it later in the week, and still be out the $15. I'm not really sure how they make out on the deal, but I've sent a few buddies that way already.

Yeah, but it some places you just can't get it refilled anyway- you have to exchange. I had a nice shiny aluminum 5# tank, but locally they only exchange. So now I have a beat up old steel tank. The good thing is that I never have to hydro test- it's just exchanged when it's empty!
