Default Leaking pressure relieve valve

Is there a trick to these things? When I get the keg up to pressure, around 17 psi, it starts leaking, just a little, but enough to drain the CO2 tank overnight. I took it off and put another one on it and it leaked. Do you only finger tight these things? I torqued one down with pliers and it really didn't do anything, still leaked. After playing with it, I got it to stop leaking, but it worries me. I'm always checking it. These ones have a plastic head and threads, is this the cheap-o deluxe model? Is there anything I could do to just not use the pressure relieve valve and keep it closed? I only use it for purging the air out, I could devise another way of doing that like cracking the lid or something similar.

There could be a defect on the seat in the keg lid. Is the rubber seal on the bottom of the relief valve OK? Is it threading in straight or cross threading? These relief valves rarely go bad. Sometimes a little keg lube on the rubber seal will take care of a leak.

No, it's not cross threaded or stripped. Bottom rubber piece looks good, solid. May have to call the keg place I bought it from and see what they say.
