Default First experience with 5L Mini Keg

So I picked up one of these for a dinner party...

...in the 5L keg since I have been interested in keeping a few around to fill when I need something to take to parties. It may have been because it wasn't cool enough and the C02 wasn't dissolved enough when I first opened it, but I opened the vent and so much gas off happened that a little beer sprayed. Then when I opened the tap it comes out really slowly and in a kind of gentle spray which made it VERY foamy. We drank probably 3/4 of it and it was still requiring TLC to avoid cups of foam and the beer seemed a bit flat like all the foam and off gassing was leaving little C02 in the beer.

Is this indicative of gravity tap mini kegs or did I just not let it cool enough before first opening? If I purchase a few from my LHBS can I expect to get better luck? Please share your experiences.
