growlers are not meant to handle the pressure of carbonating beer. only pre-carbonated beer. if youve never seen one explode, wait for your first. you will never try it again (assuming that you live).

carbonating pressures are several times higher than the 7-10 PSI of already carbonated beer. not to mention the glass, but the caps are not meant to withstand that pressure either and often deform, venting pressure.

carbonating in a growler is dangerous and is not recomended.

Based on the exploding growler comments, I have moved the remaining growlers still carbing to a safer location and covered them with a very heavy blanket. My question is, how big/bad is this potential explosion? Am I better off getting it out of the growlers now, even considering the beer isn't finished and it will probably ruin it? Or, is the heavy blanket enough to stop the glass shrapnel from the impending grenade like explosion that seems inevitable?

Thanks in advance guys, not trying to turn my basement in a war zone..

The heavy blanket should be plenty.

More likely than bottle bombs, though, is that the caps will leak enough to vent the co2 and you'll simply end up with non-carbed beer.
