I've also used the brown glass 1 qt root beer bottles... they work great.

I have been collecting 1 liter soda bottles to use as backups in case I run out of glass bottles when bottling. Since I store bottles in cardboard boxes, the clear bottles/skunking possibility doesn't bother me. Our local WalMart sells 1 liter bottles of their carbonated flavored water for .50/ea. Since I really like the beverage I figure it's a really good deal. I've not used any yet, but I'm planning on bottling some of the upcoming hefe in plastic. I have enough bottles to deal with about 3.5 gal, and I just don't want to spend more money on bottles just yet.
