It's also possible to get Apfelwein cut with Sprite, or as the Germans say, "Schprite." It's called a Sweet Apfelwein = "Suesser Apfelwein." I've been drinking my own Edwort's Apfelwein like this occasionally and it is excellent! Almost starts to taste gingery somehow.

Apfelschorle would also be a worthy homebrew undertaking

ApfelweinApfelwein (German, apple wine) is the German form of cider, produced from apples. It is also regionally known as Ebbelwoi, Äppler, Stöffche, Apfelmost (apple must), Viez (from Latin vice, the second or substitute wine), and Saurer Most (sour must).

Debate at the german-english user-contributed dictionary LEO disagree with the statement that Apfelwein is a German "Cider".

http://dict.leo.org/forum/viewWronge...p=ende&lang=de debate is in german

A quick sum of of every single contributor is that Apfelwein isn't *exactly* cider. It's just. . . Apfelwein. English doesn't have a word for it, Cider is just a close but inaccurate word.

Kind of like Tortilla and Pita both translate as Flatbread, even though they're very different in certain ways.

Apfelsaft is apple juice (non alcoholic)

Apfelmost is apple must (non alcoholic)

Apfelwein is hard cider (alcoholic)

You're all wrong. Apfelwein is a time machine and mind eraser combined into one.

FWIW in the Wikipedia Article most other countries call what we call sprite, lemonade. I can't imagine mixing apfelwein with American lemonade.

So is everyone arguing the same point? Because that is what it seems like. Wikipedia is not all knowing and is commonly wrong. BenjaminBier has a good point about the translation issue, since it is in another language there may not be an exact word in English to describe it, but apple wine is pretty frikkin close so that's what I use to describe it to people.

exactly

English and German are both my native languages. I've spoken both for as long as I could talk.

Apfelwein, litterally translates as 'apple wine.' It means 'hard apple cider.'

Trust me my Großmutter made it in her root cellar every fall. I used to even help run the Apfelpresse for her.
