Default Fermenting in Light

Is there any need to cover a fermenter full of cider to shield it from light? I figure with no hops to skunk, there's really no need. Am I right?

I absolutely cover mine. All of my meads, ciders, wines, beers, etc are in a dark place and covered with a towel or blanket. Cider, mead, and wine don't "skunk" but can get light-struck. It can change the color and flavor of the cider. Dark wines can "bleach" and the flavor can also fade. Light affects tannins, too, so can change the character of wines and ciders. UV light is the worst, but I keep it protected from all light sources.

I just have a fermentation closet that has no light in it to make sure no light affects it

Light is energy, and can trigger many reaction that change the moleculas in your fermenter, or in your bottle, inducing change in flavour, taste and colour, but the UV are the worst component of the light, so expecially be worned of them.

I'd cover it or place it somewhere dark otherwise you can run the risk of "off" flavors.
