Default Commercial Perry, not really a Perry?

I was at the store yesterday and saw a new product in the craft beer section.

A perry.

I picked it up to look at the ingredient list. Turns out they make it with apple cider and then add "all natural" pear flavors! At $5 a 22oz'er I was expecting actual pear juice not masked apple cider.

I haven't looked much into the perry scene, but is this standard for commercial perry's?

Real perry is an english drink made from specific pear cultivars (with great names like yellow huffcap). The perry pears are quite different to eating pears (high in tannin), and take many years to bear fruit. You won't find much real perry outside of England.

I've been grafting and planting some perry trees, but I don't expect to get fruit anytime soon, maybe 15 years. "Plant perry pears for your heirs".

Thanks for the history, I had no idea.

I'll keep my eye open for an english perry.
