Default The use of oak chips.

So i have a cherry melomel that's still in the primary. Its been going for 2 weeks now. I was considering using some oak chips. My question is when to use, how much and how long before you rack it off the oak.

Many people say that it doesn't matter WHEN you oak but the duration does matter. Personally, I put 1 oz in a 5 gal batch for about 1 month, 2 weeks if I want a really light oaking. I like to put it in before my final racking and bottling.

Not sure exactly what the protocal is.
