Default My first mead

Hi guys!

I'm hoping to make my first batch of mead this weekend and wanted any tips you could afford to give me. I'm also looking for a basic mead recipe. I would like to add juniper to it (has someone tried this? Is it good?). Lastly, I have a 23L carboy (I think the US equivalent is 5gallons). How much honey is usually used in a batch this big? Is it expensive?

I think that'd be 6 US gallons, or just over 5 imperial gallons.

Depends on what recipe you want to use but you should be thinking about 15 to 18lb of honey and it'll be as expensive as you want to pay.

Obviously you can get cheaper store bought/supermarket honey etc. Which is what I tend to aim for if the honey isnt the main flavour.

Hence use that for the base then add the Juniper after for flavouring.
