My first ever mead was 16 years ago and I did the entire primary in a glass 1 gallon jug, with a lid on it. i burped it often and the thing never blew up.

I'd never recommend doing such a stupid thing, but if my mead didn't explode in primary, you should be able to keep yours viable in 'secondary'.

Just an update, the basement trick seemed to work great. When this all started and I was keeping them in a room closet I had to burp all the jars 3 times a day (morning, afternoon, right before bed), and now they all seem to be fine with once a day in the cooler temperature.

I'm going to try one of the "calmer" jars out on Saturday for some UFC beverage... I'll let you guys know if I live.
