Default Eldebery Mead Gravity

Hello, I have a one gallon batch of elderberry mead currently in secondary. However, I neglected to take an OG reading on brew day. This one gallon batch had 4.5 lbs of honey in it. I've tried using the formula in the FAQ, but I must be doing something horribly wrong because I keep getting ridiculously high gravities. Does anyone know a fair estimate for the OG of this batch?

4.5# of honey with water topped up to 1g (not 1g of water + 4.5# of honey) IS going to be a number that you are likely going to blink a few times when you see it.

I don't have excel here, but dude - your calc was probably right..

4.5 pounds of honey in 1 gallon will give a starting gravity of around 1.160 - an extremely high gravity and difficult fermentation.

1.160 sounds about right. My current gravity is sitting at 1.01, which would make sense since I used champagne yeast. Thank you very much. Now time to wait...for a while...a long while.
