Are bottles necessary?

I was just having a random thought, are bottles necessary for mead (other than the option of only opening a small amount at a time)? Can you just do a final rack to a half or one gallon jug let it age and then serve from there if you were going to serve most of it at one time?
 
Certainly, as long as you can get a good seal. I've kept meads in one gallon jugs for several years. Just kept the bubbler full.
