Default Bottle Conditioning

I'm transferring 1 G mead to two 1/2 G conditioning bottles today.

Can I use screw cap bottles for conditioning? Or must I use bottles with caps? The conditioning will last 6 months or so. The screw cap has a paper lining on the top. Will this affect anything?

Thanks!

two questions:

1. is the mead done fermenting? i.e. final gravity has been held for at least a week?

2. you need to seal these bottles. I'm not sure a paper liner on a screw cap is going to be 100% airtight.

1. I'm having problems testing the FG. I'm a little confused by it. Its been sitting for 30 days though.

2. I went ahead and removed the paper seal. Now its plastic on glass and sealing properly (no bubbles upside down filled w/ water).

If it were me, I'd get a stopper for those growlers (size #6 should work) and use airlocks. 30 days is really NOT even close to having it done, especially since you haven't checked the FG accurately. Maybe it could be sealed up in 6-8 months, though, if it's finished.

That's a big IF!
Do not cap this stuff off until you have learned about final gravity checking. Mostly, it just means 2 readings that are the same for 2 or 3 consecutive readings. What other questions do you have about that?
Mead can take a LONG time to finish fermenting....at 30 days, I've not even considered anything but admiring the bubbles.
