Congrats on the brew kit! Do you have a link to the kind of kit you received? The types of recipes can vary with the available equipment.

Generally speaking though, if you enjoy darker beers they tend to be a little more forgiving for beginner brewers. The flavors tend to be more bold and you can some wiggle room as far as covering up any mistakes or just lack of accuracy issues.

My first beer was an "extract with steeping grains" style Oatmeal Stout recipe

How about a nut brown ale? A good starter brew.

If you are shopping online, you can get an extract version from places like Austin Brew Supply. They ship their beer kits for free. I bet a typical brown will cost you about 25 bucks for a 5 gallon, extract kit.

Pick yourself up a copy of "How to Brew" by Palmer. Don't trust the directions in those Mr.Beer starter kits.

I always recommend super hoppy beers, if you enjoy them, hops cover minor issues with a first brew. Best of luck, welcome to the hobby / group!
