Default Want to start a brew pub in the future.

At this point in my life, I want to start a brew pub when I am older, and do that until I retire. I'm talking about 10 years down the road, and I'm wondering what steps I should take between now and then to best ready myself for owning and running a brew pub. I am going back to school after a few years off next fall, and I am considering majoring in restaurant management, or at least business with a minor in restaurant management. The action I'm planning on taking to ready myself are:
  • Work in a brew pub long enough to get a feel for how they opperate, how they are managed, how to brew on a larger scale, and to see if i REALLY want to own one.
  • Get a degree in Business/restaurant management
  • Homebrew a lot
  • Drink Plenty of good beer
  • Work in a larger micro brewery and see if that is my style
  • Begin developing a core of excellent session beer recipes that are remarkable, but also generally agreeable
  • Find a wife to support me.

What would the veterans suggest in addition to the above list?

I would add one more item. "If you want to make a million dollars brewing, start out with two million. "

I would suggest working in a restaurant other than a brewpub at first.
Find an extremely busy, quick service restaurant. Learn your chops. Learn to compromise. Learn to facilitate. learn to listen. learn to fix plumbing. learn to caulk toilet seals. learn to change tile. Become immune to the smells that will waft forth from the restrooms while cleaning them every :30 minutes.

decide if owning a restaurant is REALLY for you.
