So I am going to invest in some 5 gallon buckets and make my own fermenters. I know this has been done in the past, well I need to know what size holes to drill for an airlock or grommet/airlock to fit in and where to get grommet if not available at my lhbs, but I think it would be. Also if I chose to stick a universal carboy bung in it instead of the airlock, what size would I drill ?

I just ordered 5 fermenting buckets and replacement grommets from Midwest brewing supplies, and it says in the web site, the grommets, are for a 1/2" drilled hole. As far as a carboy bung to put in it, measure the top and the bottom and drill a hole size in between that. The bung is tapered so it should still seal as long as the hole is round.
