Default will 1/4" tubing work

in a herms setup? i have a bunch of 1/4" aluminum tubing, 25 ft. lengths, already coiled up in 3.5" coils. i thought i'd split them off a 1/2" tee, connect 2 together on each side of the tee, reconnect them at the other end to another tee, and return to the mash tun. my thoughts are the 1/4" will give me a greater surface area/ volume of wort, with a correspondingly better heat transfer. i'm using a 5500w element in a keggle and a march pump.
thanks for any input.

I didn't have good luck trying one 40' coil of 3/8" copper... my pump just couldn't do it.
All I can suggest is try it... maybe with multiple coils it will work, but my gut says no.

I use a SS side inlet chugger... it would just trickle through. I went with 1/2" SS thin wall tubing, made my own coiler, and built my own. The difference between 1/2" and 3/8" is night and day.
If you use 4 in parallel, it might work.
1/4" id = .049" sq. in. cross section
3/8" id = .110" sq. in. cross section
1/2" id = .196" sq. in. cross section

4 x .049" = .196"... exactly the same as a 1/2" tube. With 4 x 1/4" tubes, it would be way more surface area, but with the added drag.

I'm not hip to "herms" setups, but that is for recirculating mash, yes?

I would worry about a 1/4 I.D. possibly clogging.

probably going to use some sort of strainer. it should be fairly debris-free, i'd think, after a little circulation.
