Hi,

I’m currently in the process of building a small HERMS, and as you know there are quite a lot of small bits and pieces that is needed. I’m trying to source much of the stainless hardware (valves, fittings, etc.) on ebay or aliexpress since it’s much cheaper compared to retail, at least here in Sweden. Since I live in Sweden I’m familiar with BSP standard but some of the parts I need is way cheaper in your NPT standard.

However I do struggle with getting to grip on some parts of the NPT standard, I hope you can help me with.

I want to weldless mount my HERMS coil via the bottom of the HLT, and I’ve looked at this one from aliexpress

On the outside I plan to attach a valve and a quick disconnect (all ½” NPT) and then move back to the for me more familiar BSP standard. So far so good!

My question is about what size of coil I can use, I’ve already got a coil that I want to use, but I don't know if it will fit  The outside pipe diameter is 15 millimeters (19/32“?) so, will my coil fit?

I’ve been trying to google it, but the information is conflicting (at least for me :drunk:)

Anyone who knows

The compression fitting has a compression ring in it, it would be made to slip over a 1/2" pipe. Since your coil is 3/32" larger it won't fit. I'm sure some of the US businesses that specialize in stainless fittings for homebrewers would be willing to ship to you which might be a good route so you can standardize your entire build to one diameter and one thread type.

Hi Bensiff,

Thanks for the answer regarding the size of the fitting.

I agree with you that it would be easier with one standard, and yes, US based companies do ship to my small artic country as well :)

The thing is I already have the coil, and shipping such large items can be quite costly.

I therefore think it might be better for me to turn to a local (BSP) specialist for the HERMS coil fitting, but my concern is that it will cost close to $200 just for those two fittings :(

Best Regards

If you could find some fittings to silver solder to the ends of the coil that may be a cheap workaround. I did that to a ss convoluted chiller I had gotten that didn't fit standard sizes and worked well.

Which "small arctic country"?

Look in here..........They have re-done their site, and they used to have a "worldwide" tab in their dropdown menus.
I know they still ship worldwide though, and their products ARE available worldwide, through local distributors.

Have a look, unless you've already been there:

Thanks for the replies!

I can basically order these types of bulkhead fittings from all around the world for very reasonable prices, as long as were talking about NPT standard. The problem seems to be that no BSP versions are available for OK prices, at least I can’t seem to find them.

I forgot to mention that my pumps are also with BSP threads, so I would like to avoid switching to NPT for that reason as well.

So basically I think that my two best options are to stick with BSP and get some brass fittings for the HERMS coil (the rest will be stainless) or pay up for a stainless version.

I have a few of those little 12v tan pumps that I used to use which have BSP, and depending on how many things with BSP you have, all it took was a couple extra turns with teflon tape to attach NPT to them, leak free.
