Question about fermentation
|
|
hey, I recently came across a recipe for pruno that just takes a bunch of oranges, and seeing this as a great opportunity to take advantage of my universities huge orange grove i started 2 gallon batches.
Unfortunately the ziplock bags I have been storing them in are not completely air tight and have not been ballooning up with the gases as the recipe said they should. Will the oxygen that is getting in cause the wine to rot rather than ferment?
I have no prior experience in fermentation and want to know if this will still yield a decent amount of alcoholic content or if I will just get sick if I try and drink it. Any thoughts/information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can you show the recipe, in order for me to figure out why in the world you're fermenting in plastic bags?
Nevermind, I looked it up. Disgusting. If I were you I'd throw this garbage away, for your own health.

Hold on, I'm making popcorn. Be right back.
...
Kidding aside, glad to see you're interested in fermented beverages, but please, toss the pruno and look into beer or wine. Incidentally, this thread is most likely going to be shut down soon; we don't really talk pruno here.
But please do stick around and learn about wine and beermaking, it's just about as easy, and you'll actually get something good to drink at the end.

My thought that is you can make pruno (prison hooch) by whatever means you'd like. However, homebrewtalk.com is for the discussion of quality fermented beers, wines, and ciders. We don't discuss hooch here, and don't allow hooch threads. There are plenty of places on the internet that do, however.
If you'd like to try making some cider, or welch's grape juice wine, we can help you come up with a good plan. You can make orange wine- I've seen recipes for some very nice orange wines on Jack Keller's website that I'd love to try if I had a source for oranges!
I can't tell you if the plastic bags' ingredients are harmful, and I have no experience with that method.

Here is a link to the recipe

Sorry if this isn't up to par with serious winemaking, just something I am interested in and thought might be fun to learn some more about.
