It really doesn't matter if anything is leaky if co2 is coming out nothing else can get in.

I thought there was potential for suck back, hence filling the airlock with cheap vodka

I never worry about suckback.....and yeah put alcohol or sanitzer in your airlock and if it does suck back so what?

I would just prefer (read: ocd) it if there were no leaks. If the carboy cap doesn't give a nice tight seal, or fit at all, I will experiment with the cap.

I'll try and hit the super Walmart and the Walmart Market this weekend to check out the bottles they have in stock. Last check about a year ago had #7s and #3s (3 gallon bottles where #3) but they had the same screw cap.

Yeah but with most of your guys month long primaries and for bulk aging I would want it as snug as possible.

SWMBO gave me permission (ugh) to buy four more "while they have them" because she knows if i don't, I will buy more at $25 a pop later.

Yea. At my store they are all the way on the back wall of grocery, where they keep the Soda and Beer.
