Default Early Fermentation, Foul Grapes?

Hi All,

I've scoured the web and these forums to look for answers with no avail, so here it goes...

I am a first timer making a white wine from a kit (Vino De Vida, If I remember correctly), and have a couple questions. First, the juice concentrate smelled neither sweet nor appetizing when I poured it in to my primary. Is this to be expected? I knew not to expect Welches... but it smelled 'off'. The label points to August of 2009, and I assume this is the pick date. For how long are the concentrates good? The guy at the shop had this sitting on the shelf, it looked like it had been there for a little while. He was honest enough to give me a refrigerated yeast to pitch with the kit yeast, so I would assume he wasn't selling me junk.

Also, I was told to expect fermintation in ~48 hours, however just 12 hours in the primary was bubbling away at approx. 1-2 bubbles per second. Is this normal?

Thank you all.
