Default adding raisins ?

Ok newb ? time. In alot of recipes i see they call for raisins or grape juice concentrate, why is this? Is it to add tannin w/o adding powder form? Balance of some sort?

Raisins (or bananas) are used as body boosters. They provide body, and some fermentables.
