In regards to the bulk oats at the store, while they are contaminated in the self serve containers because of the way they are handled, check to see if they have whole bag prices if you can use enough oats. Here, one of our bulk stores is Winco, and Bob's Red Mill is one of their suppliers. 2503 Regular Oats, 2504 Quick Oats, and 2514 Rolled oats are all BRM, and gluten free marked on the bag. Prices are about $35 for 20lb bag. And if anyone cares, 2105 all purpose flower is GF BRM for $42/25lb, or less than 3/4 the cost per pound of their 22oz packages.

That feels like buying from Costco in that quantity, but I made that work in the past. 20# of oats isn't really that hard to go through, especially if you like oatmeal. They won't go bad all that quickly.

20# at a time? Sweet... Locally I can only get Bob's GF oats in 2# bags, for $7. Although, my wife has successfully made spent oat cookies.

In addition to the gluten allergy, I am also allergic to oats and I was wondering if anyone has experimented with using either quinoa or buckwheat as a substitution for the oats. I'm very interested in making a darker beer style that if GF but they tend to use oats in the grain bill.

The oats add body and mouthful. I've used quinoa that I toasted, soaked until they bloomed, and mashed at 160F with amylase enzyme I purchased. It wasn't think enough but was better than without.
