Default Server Issues

Our server is maxing out. We cannot afford to rent a second server so we are piecing together two servers (app and db) and the plan is to colocate them here in Austin. Should happen in the next week or two if funds can be gotten and after there will be no more connection problems. Please bare with it until then. I am constantly rebooting the server because it gets too bogged down.

Sounds like the sign of a very active forum to me!

Is it a traffic problem, or storage problem? Maybe it's time to start dumping some of the ancient threads.

Yeah, I'd agree.

Is there a way to save them until you can get room on a bigger server in the future? Wouldn't mind seeing some of my old posts go away anyway...LOL....

No it's a traffic problem not a storage problem. CPU/RAM/HD can't handle all the concurrent connections.

Can you force tmeouts after, say, an hour of no activity? I'm not too familiar with this bb software, but I thout it was possible.

EDIT:

How are you handling robots? With all the links you have out there, you're probably getting bombed by the Googlebot and others who use up a lot of connections. You should try either banning all robots or limiting the times they visit.

These tips may help. Read about the no-index and no-follow info from this site:

http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/meta-user.html

And then create a file called robots.txt and put it in your root directory. In the file, put the following:

Code:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search.php
Disallow: /member.php
Disallow: /memberlist.php
Disallow: /private.php
Disallow: /sendmessage.php
Disallow: /report.php
Disallow: /postings.php
Disallow: /editpost.php
Disallow: /newreply.php
Disallow: /showpost.php
Disallow: /online.php
Disallow: /calendar.php
Disallow: /Warn.php
Disallow: /showgroups.php
Disallow: /showthread.php

That's probably a good idea. I forget to log out all the time. On my Mac, I usually have several web pages open in different browser windows and I tab around but don't close them. Since this site is one of my regular haunts, I'm locking one connection up.

By the way, Cheese... nice avatar. I enjoy reading your posts even more now!

Glad it's not a storage problem. It didn't sound like it was. IMHO, the archives should NEVER be deleted. They are full of priceless information, even if embarassing to some.... lol

Searching is fairly resource intensive. If you haven't already, you might make it to where only registered members can search.

Nope I would never delete a thread/post for storage reasons. Forums will be an archive of information far into the future.

I am trying to get insurance then I can buy the servers and move in. Should be happening the next two weeks or so.
