I avoid these competitions because of having to give up 5 gallons. I am far more comfortable mailing in 2 bottles.

It was a blast! It was part of the Lansdale Beer Tasting Festival. There were over 30 commercial beer there (Stone, Bear Republic, Bells . . . ) Bringing a keg got you into the VIP tasting. For an hour and a half before they opened the gate for general admission we got to drink and eat as much as we could get down. They had a huge pig just for the VIP’s along with tables of salads, breads, crackers, mussels . . .

Once the main gate opened we had to man our kegs for three hours. There was a sea of people, all very thirsty and gradually getting hammered. Once your keg was gone, you could join the party again.

I would gladly give up another keg for a day like this!

That whole event sounds awesome, I'd love to take part in something like that.

Also, as per the OP, I won a local brewpub competition with an English Pale ale not to long ago. It was nothing fancy, just an easy drinking beer that appealed to everyone. I think the farther you get from being accessible, the worse it will do.

No comparison when you get to serve your own beer to people. I gladly gave up 10 gallons, it was for a good cause, and I got a lot of back slapping. A win-win.

does this require 10gallons or 5gallons to enter? "A minimum of a 5-gallon batch will be required for judging and serving at both the official judging event and the following MBA Night."

Good question, I wasn't sure what that meant myself. I'm planning on calling or stopping by to get a clear answer soon.
