Metro Detroit "Learn to Homebrew/ Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day" @ Cap N Cork

Yes it's that time of year again, and once again some of us from HBT/Michigan Mashers are going to represent at one of the coolest events in the area.

The event is THIS Saturday. Nov. 6th 2010

We usually have a tent and some tables set up to brew on. There will be several of us brewing (including myself) and demonstrating different types of homebrewing from Extract to all grain.

There are also various other clubs and groups brewing (including the "Mead Mommas" making honey wine.) There is always plenty of beers to sample, provided by Cap N Cork, and the CRAFT homebrewing club, plus most fold bring some of their own to share.

There is usually about 100 or more folks brewing during the day and several hundred folks hanging, and drinking.

Learn to Homebrew Day (formerly known as Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day) was established by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) in 1999 to enable people interested in beer and homebrewing to learn how to brew. Learn to Homebrew Day occurs annually on the first Saturday in November, when homebrewers around the world are encouraged to learn how to brew or teach someone how to brew.

There will be several of us brewing (including myself) and demonstrating different types of homebrewing from Extract to all grain.

Around 100 of us will be doing brewing demonstrations, sharing our best beers and meads, as ...well as answering questions and helping people get started in the hobby.

Come spend a few minutes, or the day, come to learn and observe (or simply sample) or join us to brew. If you are planning to brew contact me via message and we'll coordinate details.

Cap N Cork's is on on the southeast corner of Garfield and 21 Mile in the Country Meadows Plaza. The event is actually in the back parking lot. And not visible from the front, you can either park in the front and walk through the store or park in the back. If you go around the back you can't miss the even. The address is 16812 21 Mile Rd Macomb, MI 48044.

We have a bit of an issue this year, Terrapinchef usually brings a tent and some tables. But he's got to work, and will only be stopping by later, so we don't have our usual setup. If anyone can bring either or both let me know.

We have a bit of a communal vibe going, sharing stuff like wort chillers, so if you've never done one of these and want to brew, even extract, and can lay your hands on a turkey fryer, don't worry about not having a wort chiller....one of us will be bound to have it.

Feel free to bring beer, including your own to get tasted, especially if you have any questions or concerns. There's usually a few beer judges roaming around, willing to taste and critique.

So come on out. It looks like Mustangj, and I and one other will be brewing. We'd love to have more joining us.

Normally we start setting up and brewing around 10am.

Ok, so we probably have the blue tent we usually use, but my friend Joe IS bringing sawhorses and planks so we will have a table sort of thing at least.

Here's pics from today. It was awesome. Normally I know how many folks were there, how much beer got brewed, and how much beer was available to sample, but all that was too overwhelming this time, there was just too much of everything, and most of it was in our section. I only managed to try HALF the beers on tap, there were two sets of taps, but one was next to our brew area, so I never needed to go to the other section. LOL

These were the taps by us....but also was a ton of bottled stuff. People kept coming to our area to have us taste stuff.

Dude, Jello shots??

LOL! Looks like an awesome time. I wanted to put something together, but it was too late by the time I found out about learn to homebrew day. I spent the day cleaning up a turkey fryer that a friend gave me for fixing his windshield wipers. It had been in his garage (with massive holes in the roof) for a couple of years. There was grease and dirt covering EVERYTHING! And the bottom of the kettle was pushes WAY out due to the freezing of the water that collected in it.

I think you had the better time!

Revvy 11-07-2010 04:48 PM

Yeah it's a tradition from one of the clubs there...
