i wouldn't say you are wrong or that the second clerk was wrong. Maybe it is company policy? If the product say's it cost $50, maybe company policy says $50 has to be refunded. If the first clerk messed up, that's not your fault or the second clerks fault. I'd say you made out well.
This reminds me of multiple times when we would go out to eat for lunch at work (various fast food restaurants). We would always order 2 separate orders at the drive-through, and 4/5 times, the person at the window would forget to ask for the payment for the second order, resulting in a free meal. So we would take turns at who gets to order the second meal. No guilt here, it's their job to ask for your money, and if they hand you both meals and tell you to have a nice day, while only accepting payment for one meal, then that's their fault.
