Wait, I rarely formally log out and I do keep my browser up on my laptop in sleep mode.
Does the system see me, or others in same situation, as as logged in and also active (if there is such a distinction)..?
If yes, this may contribute to these numbers being up a bit, no?

If you aren't active in 15 minutes then it drops you as a Currently Active User. I can't believe how large we are getting. Registration numbers this month have been amazing. Some days 50+ people register. I hope it's a sign that the hobby is growing.
