Default Simple Circuit Assistance

I am working on a fairly simple circuit but can't for the life me remember anything from my schooling that doesn't pertain to what I'm using in my current job.

That being said. What I'm wanting is a simple Break Beam detector circuit. It's going to be used in a cornhole game to detect a bag going through the hole.

I have on hand an IR detector and Emitter.
I just want so when the beam is broken it allows me to trigger a 5V LED circuit I've already built donating ~20 LEDs with only really 2 on at a time. It's a chaser circuit to run lights up and down the board when the bag is through the hole.

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe something like that model railroad infrared detector circuit 1 ? I forgot most of the stuff I learned for low voltage electronics. I only play with high voltage now, 345kV. But what about if you removed L2 and hooked the other circuit you built up at that point?

I'll check that one out. Looks like it should work. May need an amplifier ckt for the output but I should be able to find that in one of my old school books.

Finding a design that uses the components you already have could be a problem. In my limited experience, the toughest part of scratch building without a pre-made circuit board is physically making the connections. The leads, pins etc. are tiny these days and many components come as surface mount.

But there is probably a cost effective kit for hobbyists out there somewhere, with a small circuit board supplied, that fits your needs. IMO, that might be your best bet.

Thanks for the links. I'm not worried about the physical connection. I have a couple electronics degrees. I can trouble shoot and build circuits and systems, just don't know circuit design to save my life. I'm done the wafer boards, etched PCB's. Thats no problem.

Sounds like an interesting project. Shoot us a pic of the finished setup.

It'll be next spring most likely. I've got other projects in the foreground. This is just a small background project for pure fun, no necessity. But if this ever gets built for real, I'll be sure and post a pic and video.
