What do you mean? I thought ST was the epitome of Science Fiction Cinema. Certainly a step up from such a mundane "classic" as '2001 A Space Oddessy'. In fact, I'd even go so far as to place it above other classic films like, 'Cosmos: War of the Planets'.
I mean, surely you recognize the allegory between the giant, peace-loving (although unknown until the end, due to the language barrier) insect-like aliens and our own vicious, blood-thirsty soldiers, and the difference between love and hate.
Plus, casting of Neil Patrick Harris, as the troubled psychic genius, was simply... well, GENIUS!
I especially applaud them for not leaving aside the tear-inducing love story between the lead actor and the lead actress. It was a gutsy move to rely on a then-unknown Denise Richards, who is now recognized as the go-to girl whenever a hot babe with a nice chest is required to fill the role.
And, let's not forget the Avant-guard use of the co-ed shower scene to bring to the fore the diminishing role of sexism, while advancing womens' rights in the military (or something like that... I'm still remembering Dina's (.)(.)'s )
I forgive them the extreme use of violent action, in order sell this hear touching tale, but really, it's use was minimal, and easily overlooked.
All in all, a great film if you are a fan of the book. Or, even if you are like me, and never read the book (I mean, I don't see the point now, since I've already seen the movie once or twice.)
