Is it possible to die from drinking beer?
|
|
Okay before I continue I know alcohol is bad for you this is only to settle an argument I am having with a friend (who thinks alcohol is the devil).
Is it possible to drink your self to death on beer?? We are arguing over whether you can actually drink enough beer AT ONE TIME to get lethal ALCOHOL POSIONING. I know about the negative aspects of alcohol and prolonged excessive consumption and that there is numerous things that are alcohol related that can cause death. But the arugement seems to be that it is physically impossible to fit enough beer into your stomach to cause lethal alcohol poisoning.
Before i get inevitably flamed i have tried googling it but i could not find a website that looked only at beer consumption in one sitting.

If it won't cause alcohol poisoning, it might cause water toxicity. You can definitely drink enough water to kill yourself.
Any way you cut it, too much of a good thing can be very bad.

Several people have died from drinking too much water in a short period of time, so I'm sure beer could do it too.

Lets just say the average 5%. And again I know you can die from drinking to much water at one time but I am only concerned with alcohol poisoning. If the water in the beer is what would kill you, that must mean water is the devil!!!

i'd say it's very unlikely but possible.
your body will naturally vomit when it gets poisoned, but you could easily die from asphyxia if you passed out and choked on your own vomit.
i don't think your stomach could hold enough beer, though, to actually get your B/A level high enough to shut down your bodily functions. you'd get full, your body would have to process it, and you'd have to drink more and you just couldn't do that fast enough.
i don't believe there has ever been a documented case of someone dying without harder alcohol involved.

This page shows some good figures for determining your answer. This calculator is also helpful.
After 10 drinks (the standard glass of wine, 12 oz beer, or shot of liquor), a 180 lb person would have a BAC of .25 (assuming zero time between drinks, I think). So, after 20 "instantaneous" drinks, the BAC would be roughly double that - .50, which is enough to kill. Subtract only .01% for every 40 minutes of drinking. So, 20 drinks in an hour would be about .48-.49, still greater than the .40 that Wikipedia says is required to be lethal.
Twenty 12 oz beers is nearly two gallons. A quick Google search shows that the average human stomach can hold about 4 liters, or just over a gallon.
So, in order to get alcohol poisoning from beer alone, you'd have to drink a beer every 3 minutes for an hour and urinate nearly a gallon by the half hour mark. Is it possible? Maybe. Is it likely? Not really.

I figured as much. I highly doubt anyone would even get that much beer into them without vomitting. Thanks for the help in figuring this out. This argument originated from my anti alcohol amigo thought i was going to die when i was getting a dozen beer to go drinking for a night
Ma2brew I agree drinking beer with your friends would be an excellent way to go.
