Pets and when its time.

So I had to put down our longtime family member Zeus this past Friday. He was almost 14 and at 100 lbs he certainly lived a great life.
Before taking him in I poured some of my beer on the patio floor as he always appreciated lapping up some homebrew with me. Then I helped him into the pool so he and I could go swimming one last time (he's the black one).
His younger brother Rufus certainly is going to miss him and is pretty depressed.
We got our cat Sassy the same time as Zeus as both pup and kitten.
She seemed pretty depressed as well and was having some health problems over the last year but was doing ok as of last week. I figured she wasn't eating because she was bummed out about Zeus too and she was hiding under the bed most the weekend. Then the wife pulled her out of hiding Sunday morning and it wasn't just depression. She was dying as well. We had to put her down Sunday. Kind of like an old married couple she just let go.
I've been lucky that previous pets went naturally. I didn't realize how tough it would be to do this. Having to euthanise two in less than 48 hrs really makes for a crappy weekend.

Dammit, that sucks. Sassy looks a lot like a cat The Wife and I had when we first got together that unfortunately passed away too soon (feline leukemia) a few years back, right around Christmas time. Sounds like they were both very well-loved and had great lives; there's nothing else you can do.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry for your loss

My cat Tom is almost 11 years old and he definiteloy isn't the sprite kitty he used to be. It's always in the back of my mind that he is getting closer.
When that day comes for me it will be tough. I got that cat for my wife but over the years he has been more my cat than hers.
Sorry to see them go.

My heart goes out to you. I had to put down my beloved cat a few years back and it was one of the toughest things that i had ever had to do.
Thank you for giving them a wonderful life.

I had to put my 15 yo Baby down last year. Too many back leg problems, deaf, etc. She just wasn't able to move much and spent nearly her whole day sleeping. I felt like I was a traitor to her, but there was nothing else I could do. I dont' regret it, but I still do miss her and her own special ways.
Our 15 yo cat also died that winter, although I will say that she looked very nearly unchanged after all of those years. I don't know if it was old age, or what, but it was around the time of that pet food poisoning, so perhaps we just got unlucky. But, at 15 yo, that cat did pretty well, especially considering she was an outside cat most of the time.

Very sad.
I'm glad you had plenty of time to enjoy each others company.
This pint of Old Peculiar is for you and Zeus

sorry to hear it, we put ours down last year and I still get mildly choked up when I spot his collar next to the coat hanger/water bench.
