Lobster prices
|
|
About once a week I keep hearing how lobster prices have been at extremely low levels for one reason or another. Everytime I hear this I check out the local seafood markets & see prices ranging from $15 to $20 per pound, which seems to be the same price they were a couple years ago. I'm not seeing these low lobster prices people are talking about.
What gives? Why do I hear about low prices & don't see it?

It is like milk prices... when they rise, the farmers dont see in increase in what they are paid. You are dealing with middle men.
From what I understand the Lobster prices (paid to the fishermen) are down, but you are still paying the same amount, and someone is getting more of a margin.

I have been seeing som prices in the lower double digits and a couple time I have seen them under 10 a pound. I am not a huge lobster fan so it needs to drop a lot more before I will buy it.

It's probably like a friend of mine told me about the cattle business. I asked him (they own a big spread in S. Texas) why prices on steak were so high and even on sale, they were as high as normal prices. He said for the first time that he can remember (he's 45), everyone in the operation was making a little bit of money. From the guys that sell the fertilizer for the hay, bailers, haulers, feed lots, cost of fuel, etc. He said usually, one group was either outright losing or so close to the margin that they were dodging creditors. I would guess it's close to the same reason. - Dwain

I wonder if this place is any good. Anyone ever try ordering lobster online?
http://store.lobsterco-op.com/index.html
Says $7.50/lb. for 1.25lb. lobsters.

Damn, you guys pay a lot for lobsters. I typically find them for $6-$9 per pound regular price. On sale $4-$5 per pound.
Then again, I'm in MA. Close to the head of the supply chain.

My guess is because you're in Texas. I can get them for about half that, certainly around $10/pound in western CT. It was even cheaper than that in Maine when I went on vacation there this summer.

I'm even closer...the most expensive lobsters I bought this summer went for 3.99/lb, for chicks.
The lobsterman up here are really hurting, so much so that many of them are selling their catch out of their garages instead of selling to middleman, so they can get retail price instead of the wholesale price.

So how can I take advantage of this and get the low pricing?
