Default How often do you get lectured about alcoholism

It always gives me a chuckle when people hear that I brew at home and grow my own hops.

The first inevitable response is always "Wow! You must drink a LOT, are you an alocoholic?"

Anyone else get this very often?

Well, considering that you live in the Bible Belt, I'm not surprised. A lot of folks down there think you are an alcoholic if you take cold medicine. Up here in WI I don't get too much of that- and my MIL belongs to AA.

How to Ace an Intervention

Remain Calm
“Frank, why do you drink so much?”
“Do you really think I drink too much, Sam?
“Hell yes, I do! Hell yes!”
“Why do you think that, Sam?
“Because you drink more than everyone else!”
“Jackie Gleason told more jokes than most people. I don’t think that makes him a bad person. Do you think he was a bad person, Sam?”
“We’re not talking about jokes. Were talking about drinking.”
“I don’t know if you know this, Sam, but Gleason also drank way more than most people. Did you know that, Sam?”
“Yes, and that makes him a very sad person.”
“He was a very happy person, Sam. I think most people would love to live his life. He lived to be 72. Did you know that, Sam?”
“We’re not talking about Jackie Gleason! We’re talking about you!”
“Are you saying I don’t deserve to be as happy as Jackie Gleason? Why do you feel that way, Sam? Perhaps we should get to the bottom of those feelings before we go any further. Sam.”
Modern Drunkard sums it up the best, when dealing with crap like that

The biggest thing that I can't stand.... going to the doctor, him asking if I drink alcohol, me saying "Yes, I have a few beers every couple days" and the doctor giving me his condescending smirk.

I don't get any lectures myself, but then again I'm not having a few beers every couple of days.

A couple of beers every day maybe...

lol I come from a family where my mom thinks......if you drink you are a bad person, that if you drink hard liquor at all....that turns you into an alcoholic, that if you have one drink no matter how many hours after that, you can't drive.

My dad isn't as bad.........he just thinks that if you drink one beer that you can't drive for the rest of the day, if the cop pulls you over and smells any alcohol on your at all....you will go to jail and have your license pulled for drunk driving. no matter how many you've had.

My mom is southern baptist....so thats where that comes from....and my dad enjoys beer every once in a while, but my moms views have been instilled in him through out the years
