Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum lol.

How do you know how old a cigar is when you buy it?

A good cigar store should brag and know their inventory. Some people look for the little white spots that can be mistaken for mold, I forget what they are called. As long as it isn't mold it is supposed to be a sign of aging going well.

Palate prep, do you do anything special before you smoke?

I enjoy Key West every day of my life, born and raised here. Wouldn't have it any other way. I still love watching drunk tourist try and get the quarters in the groupers mouth.
For most NC cigars, the tobacco has already been aged. If you look up the cigar online, most brands explain a little about the blend and how long its been aged.
To prep my palate I usually drink a glass or two of water. Or you can brush your teeth and wait a while for the toothpaste taste to go away.

I smoke mostly maduros, so I really don't bother prepping my palate. I tend to drink either water or coffee as I smoke.

Same here. My two favorite drinks while smoking are water or a mocha cafe con leche. But the first time a try a stick I usually try to smoke with water and a clean palate.
Forgot to mention before... I thanked the whole crew for their service, then bought em all a few rounds and some conch fritters.

That's really cool that the whole squad got together like that after A'ghan. I still keep in touch with quite a few of my Army buddies (out 11 years now), and we try to get together as often as possible. We even went to Alaska in 2009 on a fishing trip. In 2013, myself and one buddy are renting a cabin in Colorado with our families for some fishing and relaxation. Can't wait.
And to stay on topic, I already secured a travel humidor to borrow for my trip. It's a 50 stick suitcase.
