Default Finally let people taste my beer

So the other night I was going to a weekly beer geek event and brought a bottle of my special bitter (and the prodding of a friend) and let people taste it.

As a novice homebrewer it was very nerve wracking, especially considering most of my friend are hard-core beer nerds.

I wasn't expecting much but it was such a relief to have a few people compliment me on a job well done.

No rave reviews mind you, but at this point "Right on the mark for the style and no off flavors" was a big compliment. Please don't tell me that is homebrewer code for bad

Of course now, having been a few bombers short of what I needed, I owe people a few more homebrews for their contributions. Hopefully the ego can handle it.

If they weren't lying, that's a nice compliment!

In my experience....

if you share a beer with another home brewer and have to ask "what do you think?" then it was bad. If the person comes right out on first sip and says "this is good!" or something to that effect then you succeeded in making a good beer!

If they drank what you gave them they liked it.

I think, as a homebrewer, you are ready and willing to take the good with the bad. Truthful reviews are the only helpful kind. It sounds like you did good here, but don't be afraid to hear bad news, and I personally insist on it. Only when you know what people don't like about your beer, can you decide if, and how, to do something about it.

And not every negative comment requires a correction. You have to decide, possibly through several reviews, whether or not it's actually a problem for you.

There are two general lines of thought on this.
1) You submit your beer to friends and acquaintances for their remarks. This is great if you really only care about pleasing yourself and your friends.
2) You submit your beer to qualified judges at a competition. The judges will *probably* have more experience with all kinds of craft beer and will *probably* have useful feedback that could actually help you improve.

Note that *probably* means that not all judges are equal and all of them are only human. Also, they will be judging your beer against a fairly rigid style guideline, and often very awesome beer will not necessarily score great against such rigid criteria. But, at least you will have comments pertaining to off flavors (or expected flavors depending on the ingredients) and commonly avoidable mistakes, such as oxidation, under attenuation, high fermentation temperatures, etc.

As a hobby, it's really all about what makes you happy. For many here, there is no need or desire to submit beer for competition. It's quite enough to make beer they, and their friends enjoy.
