1967 Chevrolet Impala SS427 (1968) Specifications

Quote:
The new-for-1967 Impala 427 was marketed with the slogan 'For the man who'd buy a sports car if it had this much room'. By slotting in the big-block engine from the Corvette, the result was impressive. The engine had been released the year before and from the outset the 'Rat' motor was engineered to produce much power. Staggered valves in the heads created better flow (at the cost of size and weight), while the impressive torque made hauling along the Impala easy. The new car used a wider front track than early 1960s Chevrolets and, because of the fastback coupe shape, the bodyshell was required to be very strong, which aided handling. The SS also had superior rear axle location with four rather than three links, making it one of the best-handling large muscle cars of the era. The SS427 reverted to an option package in 1968, then was retired the following year
I loved that car, I was driving it when I graduated High School in 1969. One night I dicited to see how fast it would go. At 140+ on I-20 between Monroe and Calhoun I dicided it could go faster than I could.

Sorry, I could not get the pic to post.

Top speed: 130 mph (208 km/h)
0-60 mph (0-96 km/h): 6.0 sec
Engine type: V8
Displacement: 400 ci (6,554 cc)
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Max power: 360 bhp (268 kW) @ 5,000 rpm
Max torque: 440 lb ft (596 Nm) @ 3,600 rpm
Weight: 3,197 lb (1,453 kg)
Economy: 10 mpg (3.54 km/I)

It was one of those cars you had to shut off while filling up at the pump, otherwise you'd run the tank dry.

It isn't exactly a muscle car, so much as a purpose built race car, but the Shelby Cobra is my hands down favorite. The 289 FIA version was a bit more nimble, but the 427 SC was just plain bad ass. Most of the 427 models had sleeker lines, too. I'm pretty convinced that I'm going to build a replica one of these days.
