He said it's a wired connection.

It's doable but it's not easy. The easiest ways to do it are:

1) Get a small wifi router
2) If the desktop has a wifi card, create an adhoc hotspot that the Razr can then connect to
3) Share the connection via Bluetooth (if the desktop is so equipped). Tiny Bluetooth adapters do exist

Rooting is easy. However using the reverse tether will probably not allow you yo bypass the firewall at work and your browsing will be most likely easily traced back to your workstation. Just fyi
