The commercialization is getting ridiculous!

I am calling on everyone here to get everyone they know to NOT shop on Thanksgiving day. It is totally classless that Target, Walmart, Kmart Toys R Us, Sears and others will be opening 9pm on Thanksgiving day. It is also very disrespectful to the employees who will not be able to spend the day with their families.

I personally have not shopped on black Friday since the early 80's an will not ever again. Well maybe online, but I would not expect anything to be done right away.

Cudo's to Nordstram for not displaying Christmas items until AFTER Thanksgiving.

Pass the word! Let's see empty stores on Thanksgiving day!

Tell me about it, I'm one of the poor souls working at one of the above. Start work at 6pm, no Thanksgiving dinner with the family this year.

Also before anyone starts with get a new job or I've dug my own grave. Easier said then done, I'm a full time student and they work well with my hours. The pay and benefits are too hard to give up until I have my degree.

About half of police, fire, military, EMS, and hospital staff dont get to be home so who cares?

I don't get to be home for thanksgiving Christmas or new years. But i bet if this employees had a choice between not working the holidays and a paycheck I know which one they'd choose.

We need those people to do that job on Thanksgiving and hopefully they are getting a holiday premium for it. We don't need to go shopping for some brat's gift that night.

I get time and a half plus another full 8 hours on thanksgiving as a nurse. However, when I was a kid I would have loved to work on a holiday when I worked at Target, its more money in the bank and its not like its christmas

My brother is a EMS, sister a nurse, and brother in law a doctor, conveniently those are the people who I cannot be with as I'm a retail associate. And you said it yourself, HALF of those people are off. Stores will be 100% staffed for thanksgiving/black Friday.

Not to mention, as stated, those people are to serve and protect for the greater good of humans. Retail is commercialism. You don't NEED that half off sweater, or TV. Those things are luxuries, not necessities.

Also, to chose between a paycheck and not working the holidays. Most places pay there associates minimal wage for these days. Not to mention, as soon as the holiday is over, about 30% of the staff get the boot, as they're only holiday employed. Yes, In the end its a pay check, but its also unnecessary to open that early. If all stores opened at 9am or whatever normal hours they would on Friday, everyone would have the same advantage to get the deals, their is no advantage to opening earlier, its just commercialism at its finest.

Not to mention the added cost of keeping a store open for extended hours, adding extra hours to the budget to staff those hours, you'd save/make more money if all stores just opened as normal, and ran their specials then.

I don't shop in those crowds anyway so I'm a default boycotter I suppose.

That being said, I agree about the commercialization of the whole thing.

I worked briefly in retail, you also have to realize the only choice you have on a day like that is to work it, or lose your job, or quit, especially if you're the low man/woman on the totem pole. You're pretty much FORCED to do so. Same with black Friday.

I wonder, are the owners/shareholders of these big retail outfits going to be working on that day? Or are THEY going to be enjoying their little Norman Rockwell holiday's while the 'Po folk' especially the single parents have to try to find child care on that day.....Or simply just can't be with their family.

I am so with you. I heard that on the news this morning and I almost **** a brick. How ****ing greedy and heartless do you have to be to make your employees work on Thanksgiving? I've only been to the store once on black Friday and I assure you I will never ever do that again. The year I went was the same year I first heard of the employee opening the door getting trampled to death! Are you ****ing kidding me?! It makes we want to grab an M-16 and keep in check the horde that is about to descend upon retail stores across America. You wait for the ****ing door to open and the employee to get to a safe distance, then you can all devour yourselves and lose your soul to the almighty dollar.

You're ****ing ****ting me, right? All the people you just mentioned knew exactly what they were signing up for. Who the **** are you to say that just because some people are needed for essential functions that because of that we shouldn't try to maximize the number of people who are spending their holiday with family instead of perpetuating American greed?
